Entrepreneur and BU alumni Dan Brown shares his story of how he now runs his own successful marketing consultancy business.
Having always had an entrepreneurial mindset, Dan knew he wanted to choose a degree course that would offer a broad range of career opportunities. Business studies seemed like the perfect fit, providing a solid foundation in various aspects of business and management. Dan says: “My studies equipped me with essential skills and knowledge that have been directly applicable in my career. The broad range of subjects covered in my course gave me a well-rounded understanding of business operations, marketing, and management. This diverse knowledge base has been crucial in my entrepreneurial endeavours and has helped me navigate the challenges of running a business.”
When we asked Dan what the best things were about his university experience, he says; “The best things were the opportunities it provided and the people I met. Without university, I’m sure I wouldn’t be doing a job I enjoy as much as I do now.”
After leaving University, Dan worked in a number of roles to increase his experience, however it was taking a significant pay cut that ultimately led him to starting his freelance journey. Dan now supports many struggling businesses through implementing effective PPC marketing campaigns. For him, the most rewarding part of his work is seeing the tangible differences he can make to a business. He says: “It’s incredibly rewarding to see the positive impact my work can have.”
Dan’s one key piece of advice for anyone looking to get into this field is to get as much experience as possible. He says: “Sometimes, you might have to take roles that might not seem ideal at the time, but if you can see the opportunities they offer, it can be worth it. For me, such a role enabled me to start my freelance journey, and I haven’t looked back since.”
