Hollie Craig studied BA (Hons) Sociology at BU and now works as a Southern Universities Network Progression Mentor at Bournemouth and Poole College.
Why did you choose to study your particular course?
I've always been interested in people; the way they interact, the rules we make and how our daily lives vary so greatly. I chose Sociology as the course looked at sociological theory, but also Criminology, Anthropology and more.
Why did you choose to study at BU?
BU has a reputation of being a very close-knit community. The class sizes meant I could speak with my lecturer 1-1.
How did your studies prepare you for what came next?
By learning how to independently manage myself and my studies, this has translated into an efficient way of working in my career.
Your career journey so far - significant roles and any interesting twists and turns?
I worked as a Housing Officer after graduation where it was my job to assist people to solve their housing problems. As I was torn between education and housing policy, I then moved into education outreach and widening participation. This is where my true calling is.
What do you enjoy most about your work or find most rewarding?
As the first person in my immediate and wider family to ever attend university, the chance to mentor other students to access these opportunities is rewarding.
What advice would you have for other students (or potential students) thinking of following a similar path?
Think about what you will talk about in your potential interviews. Grades are only half of the picture. Even one hour per week volunteering in the sector you're interested in will put you miles above other candidates.
