Gerlind Becker
MA Screenwriting (part-time)
I work as a staff editor at an educational publishing company in Germany where I’m responsible for EFL (English as a Foreign Language) videos for German schools.
I applied for the MA Screenwriting course at Bournemouth University because the Media School has a good reputation, the course was Skillset approved, I already gained my Bachelor’s degree in the UK and I couldn’t find a screenwriting course in Germany that would have been compatible with my full-time job AND led to a Master’s degree.
So the course at BU was ideal for my particular situation: I could do most of the course work on week-ends or in the evenings after work. But there were also 4 one-week-residencies in Bournemouth over the course of 2 years. I found these intensive weeks, packed with seminars and screenings, very inspiring and motivating. They were also a great opportunity to talk to my class-mates. For the rest of the course we communicated via an Internet forum or Facebook and I had telephone or Skype tutorials with my tutors which worked fine.
The best thing about my course was our diverse group of English and international students of all ages which made for interesting discussions in class. Because we were a small group of 15-20, we got to know each other quite well and got more attention from tutors than what’s usual in larger courses.
I learned a lot about screenwriting and the British film industry during my two years at BU. The course has enabled me to write better scripts for the educational videos and helps me to pursue my own screenwriting projects as well.
