Dr Allan Brodie, Architectural Historian and Visiting Fellow at Bournemouth University Business School and Dr Kathryn Ferry, Historian specialising in Architecture, Design and Seaside Culture will be leading the first Bournemouth Art Deco Walking Tour run by the Seaside Heritage Network on Saturday 29 June from 2pm to 3:30pm.
Departing from Bournemouth Pier, the tour will cover eleven Art Deco structures in Bournemouth town centre, including the former Odeon Cinema building, the unique Motor Mac’s Garage, the Maples furniture store, and the Bournemouth Echo newspaper building. Allan and Kathryn will guide you through the notable features of these distinctive streamlined buildings and explore the significance of these Art Deco buildings for the resort. The walk includes a printed copy of the walking trail alongside recommendations on other Art Deco buildings in the area which you may want to visit in Bournemouth.
Dr Allan Brodie and Dr Kathryn Ferry are part of The Seaside Heritage Network team: “It is important to recognise and celebrate this heritage because seaside tourism was an industry that created its distinct architectural legacy. It provides the nostalgic backdrop to modern seaside tourism, making our coastal resorts interesting and increasingly dynamic places.”
This opportunity is funded by the UKRI Regional Innovation Fund awarded to Bournemouth University (BU) to boost research and development. The walk is free to join, although limited spaces are available. The tour will last approximately 90 minutes, walking on paved surfaces with some steps. Book your space online.
