On Wednesday 1 November, Bournemouth University’s Faculty of Media & Communication hosted a thought-provoking conference on the theme of "The role of social media and its impact on education; deciding who regulates."
The conference aimed to foster a deeper understanding of the influence of social media, deliberating on aspects of law, and safeguarding for children online, data protection, brand advertising and online influencers. It provided a platform for scholars and experts to exchange insights and share their research findings.
The conference provided an opportunity to discuss current issues in advance of Parliament Week, bringing together renowned researchers from across the university as well as professionals in law, teaching and guest researchers from various institutions across the UK.
Postgraduate researcher, MacDonald Amaran, conference organiser said: ‘’We must not only look at the negative side of social media, as there is also a positive side as well. The conference gave researchers the opportunity to appreciate some of the issues deliberated upon from a variety of perspectives.” Macdonald is currently researching the impact of social media (TikTok) on children, the consumption of their screen time, the role of parents and the responsibilities of social media platforms.
This event was supported by the Doctoral College PGR Research Culture and Community Grant. The grant is open to PGR funding applications until 1 December to support researcher-led social and/or academic events.
