The Academy, which is based in in the School of Hotel and Tourism Management at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, aims to further research and professional investigation into the tourism industry, and has an elected membership based on scholarly achievements and contributions to tourism.
Bournemouth University’s (BU’s) Professor Buhalis, as the first Vice-President, will take up his position at an Academy visit to the Sun Yat-sen University in Guangdong in May 2017. Alongside Professor Buhalis, BU is also represented by Professor John Fletcher and Professor Steve Wanhill.
Professor Buhalis said: "The International Academy for the Study of Tourism provides intellectual leadership globally in tourism and capitalises on our academician’s expertise to make an impact to society.
He added: “We will bring our expertise to the wider global society and make our contribution to global tourism through our conference, social media and close interaction with other associations and forums. Externalising the Academy will enable us to make a difference and use tourism as an instrument for wealth creation and prosperity globally."
