"Students said – through the award winning feedback tool SimOn – that they wanted improved campus facilities for meeting friends in a more informal environment, as well as better access to the Students’ Union to see what they could get involved with."
- Daniel Asaya, SUBU President
This happened:
BU invested £10.5 million in the Student Centre located on the Talbot Campus.
The six-storey building contains a range of social and collaborative learning space – including beach hut techno-booths and bookable meeting rooms, as well as catering facilities and access points for student services.
It is also the new home of the Students’ Union at Bournemouth University (SUBU) – containing the SUBU offices, student advice centre and activities hub, and new radio studios and space for Nerve* student media. It also features a glazed walkway providing direct access to the library, and windows which look out onto the SportBU sports hall.
SUBU President Daniel Asaya said: "SUBU Towers (as students now call it) has gone a long way to improve the student experience at BU as SUBU now has a new home where students can meet friends, book out rooms to study and have more access to all the services SUBU provides as well as know what the full time elected officers are up to."
BU students also contributed to the design of the Student Centre, taking part in student engagement workshops and Design Quality Indicator (DQI) workshops at key stages of the project design, as well as reviewing the interior design plans and proposed furniture samples. In addition, Students' Union representatives took part in a reference visit to the furniture showrooms in Clerkenwell where final options have been selected for project board approval.
The Student Centre is open from 8am until 10pm daily, including all weekends other than the university’s Christmas closure.
