The Students’ Union at Bournemouth University (SUBU) annual Big Give initiative started in April, encouraging BU students to donate their unwanted items as they pack up for the summer. Since then the collection boxes around both campuses and locations in Winton were quickly filled by students, staff and the local community with clothes, books, and home wares (as well as the occasional fancy dress outfit).
At the final count, these donations weigh-in at 800kgs – just shy of the 1.1 tons collected last year – with donations going to the British Heart Foundation, The Salvation Army, Hope for Food and The Trussell Trust.
Newly elected SUBU Vice-President Community for 2016/17, Georgia Larkins, is keen to improve participation in charity events, and commented that “The items collected will go directly to those in need as well as raise vital funds for research. A massive thank you to everyone who donated to charity instead of putting them in the bin to be sent to landfill”.
