Be a catalyst for positive change – not just for yourself, but for our shared environment by embracing sustainable practices and prioritising your health and wellbeing. Today we’re sharing some of the initiatives available to the BU community which enable you to look out for the environment whilst supporting yourself.
Pedal Power: A greener commute
Pedal towards a more sustainable future. Cycling is a cost-effective way to travel that keeps you fit and helps the environment. We provide campus services to make cycling accessible for all including secure cycle compounds, shower facilities, monthly bike maintenance with the Bike Doctor, student discounts for bikes and equipment and more.
There is even the option to loan or share a bike through our BU by Bike or Beryl Bike Share Scheme. Or, as a student, you can claim 200 free Beryl minutes to travel around the local area by downloading the Beryl Bike app, signing in with your BU email address and using the promo code BUBERYL200.
Explore all the support available to you by visiting our relevant BU webpages with more information.
Think reusable
Bringing lunch to campus and using provided microwaves not only saves you money but also reduces packaging waste associated with take-out meals. We promote the use of reusable items to minimize single-use plastic consumption at BU and encourage all students and staff to carry refillable water bottles, with several water refill and other communal access points located across our Talbot and Lansdowne Campus.

We’ve also partnered with Chartwells to bring a returnable cup scheme to BU. It costs £3.95 to join the scheme and once you’ve joined, you’ll never need to remember to bring a reusable hot drink cup with you to campus again! Every time you visit a Chartwells Café at BU you’ll be able to use a fresh cup as well as get the reusable cup scheme discount on your drink.
A smoke-free campus
We believe that everyone on our campus has the right to a smoke-free learning and working environment without exception. We’ve endorsed the principles of the Government’s ‘Smokefree by 2030’ target and have pledged to help reduce the harm caused by smoking.
Our smoke-free campus pilot at Talbot Campus has been extended until Easter whilst we review the feedback we’ve received from the BU community. If you are interested in using the pilot to help you give up smoking, you can find lots of great resources on the Live Well Dorset website. These include this short video about the physical benefits to your health from stopping smoking.
