At BU we value and respect diversity and ensure that we are inclusive. We take responsibility for the impact of our actions and focus our activity as a learning community on making a positive contribution to society.
This is why we have a zero-tolerance approach to any form of abuse or hate crime and will take action against any student or staff member who is deemed to have breached our Conduct, Welfare or Harassment policy and procedures.
Hate crimes are those which are targeted at people because of hostility or prejudice towards their disability, race or ethnicity, religion or belief, sexual orientation or gender identity. Such offences could include verbal abuse, physical assault, domestic abuse, harassment and damage to properly.
For more information about how we deal with hate crime or incidents at BU, please read our Hate Crime Policy and look at our Hate Crime Reporting Flow Chart.
Report it
If you, or someone you know, has witnessed or been affected by a hate crime or incident support is available at BU and beyond. You don’t have to deal with it alone.
We want to stamp out any misconduct and can only take action if we’re aware of unacceptable behaviour taking place. You can report any form of hate crime or incident in several ways:
- Online form – you can report an incident anonymously via our online form. This will be sent confidentially to a dedicated BU member of staff.
- Phone – if you’re deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired you can use the emergency SMS/Text: 80999 or non-emergency SMS/Text: 67101 for off campus incidents. Please note that you'll need to register your mobile phone first to use this service.
- Dorset Police – you can report an incident to Dorset Police via the Dorset Police online reporting form or by calling 101 from any phone, including a mobile.
If you find yourself in an emergency on campus, please call 01202 962222 from a mobile or 222 from an internal landline. For off campus emergencies call 999.
