In the final Talk BU Live of 2014, Dr Don Parker spoke about the origins of our modern festive season.
The talk, entitled, "Is Christmas a season of goodwill or for fighting over TVs on Black (and blue) Friday?", explained how Christmas as we know it was invented by the Victorians. Don went on say that many of the key images and ideas we associate with Christmas were in fact created by advertisers and marketing teams. he explained that these advertisers created an idea of seasonal giving that consumers have perpetuated throughout the last two centuries, from Dickensian Christmas cards to televised adverts from John Lewis and Sainsbury's.
